One may suppose the word corduroy is derived from "corde du roi" (cloth of the king) but in fact there is no such phrase in French and the word, like the cloth, is of English origin. In essence corduroy is a form of velvet, made durable and more versatile. Corduroy is also a transitive verb which refers either to making a road across a swamp by laying down logs or to the crossing of such a road.
